2. Do you like the work as a triptych or would it be better standing alone? Why? Do you like the layout of the images? Why or why not?

Writing an artist reflection

I'd like you to reflect on the final images you've chosen for your composition technique assignment.

The process of reflection is an important aspect in the production of an artist’s portfolio. Successful reflection enables self-awareness and personal growth. The artist statement should reveal the beliefs, emotions and feelings of the artist. Please answer the following questions in the shared google doc.

  1. Describe the photograph.
  2. What was the composition technique/s used in this artwork?
  3. Describe what you did to create this shot. Did you plan ahead? Did you adjust things to get the right angle, etc?
  4. What are some of the concepts that you learned while photographing this assignment?
  5. Why did you select these photographs specifically? What do you like about them?
  6. What would you change if you were to shoot this again? Why?
  7. Did anything about this assignment surprise you?
  8. Overall, how do you feel about the process and outcome?

Then, you will look at a selected students photographs and check their comp technique assignment. Did they label their images correctly? Are each techniques photographed? You will use a checklist and rubric.

Make sure you have examples of the following:

1. Cropping
2. Balancing elements
3. Background (avoid clutter)
4. Avoid Mergers (just always do this!)
5. Perspective/viewpoint
6. Landscape vs. portrait (show examples of both, shoot something in landscape then flip the camera and shoot it vertically)
7. Framing within frames
8. Leading lines
9. Diagonals
10. Repetition and pattern
11. Symmetry

Upload to google drive and label each picture!

Save your top two in a Final Composition folder.

Photographer - research

First, select 10 Famous Photographers, that you like, and list their name, type of photography, and 2-3 images that showcase their style.

Upload all info to your Google drive account and I will print (unless we get the printers working) Then, you will cut and collage this information in your sketchbooks. You can add notes to each photographer (they may influence your work later this year).

Any, questions?

Once finished, select one photographer to research further. You will need the following information about your chosen photographer:
  • Full name of individual
  • Date and place of birth & indicate years of life (and if still living)
  • How influenced-by others in field of photography
  • How influenced-by circumstances in life
  • Typical subject matter of photographs made by this artist
  • What this artist is trying/ tried to communication
  • Typical style of work
  • Geographic places this photographer shot
  • Significant contribution(s) to photography (or the art world)
  • What they themselves said/say about their work (quotes OK)
  • What others have said about the work
Include 5 examples of this person’s photography, either photocopied (from a print source) or computer generated images (from an electronic source). These visual images need to include the photograph’s title, year made, must be at least 5x7 inches and of good visual quality (i.e., readable-not overly pixelated) to be glued into your sketchbook.

One Shot - Sure shot

One day photo assignment.

Today, we will be hosting students from local feeder schools.

In groups of 4-5, you will complete this photography scavenger hunt.

We will showcase the pictures at the end of the period through a quick critique. This lesson was adapted from Phyllis Burstein's One Shot-Sure Shot blog.

Challenge:
In groups of 4 or 5, students take photos emphasizing point of view, proportion, and scale.

Materials: digital camera for each group of 4/5 students, handout with prompts for photos

Process:
• Students assemble in groups of 4/5.
• They take photos based on the following prompts:
--Make the tallest person in the group look small.
-- Make the shortest person in the group look tall.
-- Photograph something close-up and then again far away so that each photo looks like it is a different object/place.
-- Can you trick us? Take a photo that plays with our sense of space so that we are confused about point-of-view, proportion, and scale.

MULTIPLE EXPOSURE WITH FLASH AND SLOW SHUTTER SPEED

In a dark room or outside at night, set your camera to 30 seconds at F 8 or 11 (adjust as necessary to get the perfect exposure)and 200 ISO. Make sure to be on Manual metering and MF for manual focus. Focus before the lights go off. During the long exposure, have your subject move slightly and manually set off the external flash (at M mode, not ETTL) each time they move and you will capture them several times during the long exposure. You should post your best 1-3 images from the multiple exposure shoot.
